Day 2: Hippaheikki

Origin: Teerenpeli Brewery & Distillery (Lahti, Finland)

Style: Extra Special Bitter (ESB)

ABV: 4.7%

IBU: Not Listed

Description: This Finnish ESB pours a gold colour, and true to its style, with low carbonation and a thin head. And while the label describes the beer to be “voimakkaasti humaloitu,” meaning “strongly hopped,” I feel the hops aroma is actually quite mild, with a faint malty sweetness.

On the palate, Hippanheikki has medium bitterness. It’s light and crisp with a dry finish, somewhat reminiscent of a lager.

Overall, this is an easy drinking beer that would pair well with grilled meats or pizza. For other ESB examples, I’d recommend trying Russell Brewing’s Blood Alley Bitter or Fuller’s Extra Special Bitter. ~C.T.
